到底 and 究竟 — what is it, then
Pressing for an answer — and a 到底 question never takes 吗.
规则
到底/究竟 go inside a QUESTION to press for an answer, with a note of impatience: 你到底去不去？
They never combine with 吗. They need a question word (谁/什么/怎么) or an A-not-A (去不去).
WRONG: 你到底去吗？ RIGHT: 你到底去不去？
到底 also works in a STATEMENT meaning in the end, after all: 他到底还是来了。 究竟 cannot do that.
究竟 is the more formal, written one.
