They really are so clever, and so quick on their feet!

This piece belongs to a series of 100 posts written in memory of Thom's grandmother, published on her Facebook.

Here is a very interesting story from this book. I would like to translate it and share it with you — the wonderfully creative and endearing story of Boonam Sattee raising money for the community.

“The school I went to was a girls’ school. And I went to three of my male teachers and asked them whether they would be willing to have their leg hair waxed for charity. After three weeks of persuading, they agreed. I promoted the event loudly, putting up posters announcing that the choice of who would be waxed would be made by the whole school.
Then I asked everyone to vote for the teacher they most wanted to see waxed. I ran the voting for more than a week. The result was that two of the candidates were neck and neck. So I held the event again, just between the two of them. Once again, I charged the people who voted. After that round of voting, I charged the people who came to watch, sold popcorn and drinks and so on, and if anyone wanted to do the waxing themselves, I charged by the wax strip. It was a very simple event, and together with a great many friends I raised 600 euros.”

They really are so clever, and so quick on their feet!

I bought this second-hand Lonely Planet for 32,000 VND at 茉莉二手書店師大店 (Mollie Used Books Shida Store).

And to my complete surprise, I can still make out the membership phone number that gets you 15% off the bill. Oh my!

The cover of a worn Lonely Planet book, the word “VOLUNTEER” in large white letters on a green band; below it a photograph of two boys rolling a bicycle rim along a white sand beach
Lonely Planet’s “Volunteer: A Traveller’s Guide to Making a Difference Around the World”.

Remember this — revisit it in a few days.
