“Soft” discipline

When you have to discipline someone, or spend money you were given but did not want to accept and cannot give back — what do you do?

This piece belongs to a series of 100 posts written in memory of Thom's grandmother, published on her Facebook.

Use that money to plant forests, to build flood-proof houses, to support world food security programmes. That is what I have agreed with myself to do — with the money owed when a student of mine cancels a lesson at the last minute without a good reason, with the money my students wanted to give my grandmother, with the fee I am paid even though we had agreed I would work for free, and with a small fixed amount I send to one organisation every month.

If any of you have another interesting way of doing it, please tell me!

There are five organisations I have always trusted with my donations.

  • Joy Foundation (introduced to me by Hoàng Nguyên)
  • Nhà Chống Lũ (Flood-Resistant House)
  • Gaia Nature Conservation
  • World Food Programme
  • Save the Children in Vietnam

Remember this — revisit it in a few days.
