的 — possession and modifiers
Who owns what — and when a speaker drops the 的 altogether.
规则
的 attaches a modifier to a noun: 我的书, 老师的电脑, 很好的朋友。
With close family and your own institutions it is usually dropped: 我妈妈, 我们学校, 我朋友。
If the noun is obvious, drop the noun and keep 的: 这本书是我的。
Do not confuse 的 with 是 — 这是我的书 has both, each doing its own job.
