在 — at, in, and in the middle of
One 在 doing three different jobs; the trick is telling them apart.
规则
1. The verb to be at: 我在家。 (no other verb needed)
2. A place preposition before the verb: 我在家看书。
3. 在 + verb = in the middle of doing it: 他在吃饭。
All three are negated with 不: 我不在家。 他不在吃饭。
