想 and 要 — want, intend, and don't
The negative of 要 (want) is 不想. 不要 means don't — the trap almost everyone falls into.
The rule
想 = would like, wish: 我想去中国。
要 = want / intend, firmer and already planned: 我要一杯茶。 我明天要去上班。
要…了 also means about to: 火车要开了。
WARNING: the negative of 要 want is 不想, NOT 不要. 不要 means don't.
