HSK 3 · 得 · 应该 · 必须

Must, should, have to — and their negatives

The negative of 得 is not 不得 but 不用 — the step where nearly everyone falls.

The rule 得 (read děi, not de) = have to, colloquial: 我得走了。
应该 = should, a piece of advice: 你应该多休息。
必须 = must, the strongest, usually a rule: 上课必须带书。
NEGATIVES: there is no 不得. Need not is 不用; may not is 不能。
