HSK 4 · 反而 · 却
反而 and 却 — on the contrary, and yet
Both are adverbs and sit AFTER the subject — they cannot open a clause the way but does.
The rule
却 = yet, but — something contrary to expectation: 他很努力,成绩却不好。
反而 = on the contrary — the outcome runs the opposite way: 吃了药,病反而更重了。
BOTH ARE ADVERBS: after the subject, before the verb. Never at the head of a clause.
RIGHT: 成绩却不好。 WRONG: 却成绩不好。
但是 is the conjunction, and that one may lead.
