The same article, told in plain words — for younger readers, or for anyone who wants the point quickly.
If you have read the roadmap for a six-year-old learning English, do not translate it into Chinese. It breaks in three places.
One: Chinese has no phonics. The single best-evidenced intervention in the entire English plan simply does not exist here. Two: tones are a genuine young-learner advantage, but a child with a tonal mother tongue does not get them for free, whatever you have been told. Three: a Vietnamese child holds an asset no European child holds — the Sino-Vietnamese layer already sitting inside their own language — but it pays late, not early.
Those three facts determine the shape of the whole six years.
Start with the arithmetic — and it is harder here
The sum is the same as before: two lessons a week, ninety minutes, forty weeks, is 120 hours a year, or roughly 700 hours from six to twelve.
But there is a large difference nobody mentions: children's Chinese input is far scarcer outside China than English input is. You cannot open any streaming service and find thirty seasons of age-appropriate material. Sourcing is not a footnote here — it is a real part of the parent's job, and if it is not solved the plan does not run.
So the central principle holds even harder: a workable roadmap is not about finding a better school, it is about building a daily stream of input at home. With Chinese you simply have to construct that stream rather than pick it up.
On age: as with English, six is not late. Hartshorne, Tenenbaum and Pinker (2018) found grammar-learning capacity holds until around seventeen or eighteen; Muñoz's BAF project (2006) found that in school conditions older starters progress faster per hour. What young children are genuinely better at is sound — and in Chinese, sound means tone.
Tones: a real advantage, but not a free one
Vietnamese parents are routinely told their child will pick up Mandarin tones easily because Vietnamese is tonal. This is partly true, and the false part costs a good deal of time.
The true part: the child already has the concept that pitch changes what a word means. That is a real cognitive hurdle, and English- or French-speaking children spend months clearing it. A Vietnamese child does not have to.
The false part: the two tone systems do not line up. Hao (2012) compared learners with tonal and non-tonal first languages and found something surprising: a tonal mother tongue does not confer a straightforward advantage. In some cases the existing tone categories actively interfere, because the learner forces each Mandarin tone into the nearest native category rather than hearing what it actually is.
For the Vietnamese–Mandarin pair the interference is specific. Mandarin tone 2 gets pulled towards thanh sắc; tone 3, a low dipping tone, gets pulled towards thanh hỏi; and tone 1, high and level, has no real Vietnamese counterpart at all, so children tend to bend it up or down.
The practical consequence: do not let the child infer the tones. Perceptual training work by Wang and colleagues (1999) showed that deliberate tone-discrimination practice with feedback produces clear gains that survive for months. A few minutes a day of hearing two syllables and answering same or different is worth more than hours of unmonitored repetition after a recording.
Why there is no phonics for Chinese — and what replaces it
In the English plan, phonics is where the evidence is strongest: teach letter–sound correspondences systematically and children read. Characters do not work that way. You cannot sound out a character you have never met.
But that does not mean characters are lawless. This is the most expensive misconception in the field.
Shu and colleagues (2003) analysed the full character inventory of Chinese primary textbooks and found that the great majority of characters children meet are semantic-phonetic compounds: one part hints at meaning, the other at sound. The phonetic component is not perfectly reliable, but it carries real, usable information.
Shen and Ke (2007) showed that among foreign learners, radical awareness predicts new-word acquisition — and that it develops with proficiency, meaning it can be taught. McBride-Chang and colleagues (2003) found morphological awareness to be a unique predictor of character recognition in Chinese children.
So the replacement for phonics is: teach characters by component, not by stroke.
A child who learns 请 as speech radical + 青 retains it, and can then attempt 清, 情, 晴 and 睛 on sight. A child who learns 请 as eleven strokes in order has to start from zero on every one of them.
One more consequence: Everson (1998) found that among learners of Chinese, being able to pronounce a word and being able to state its meaning are tightly linked. Characters the child cannot say are characters the child almost certainly does not know. Which is why, in this roadmap, the ear still leads the script — even though the script is the part that looks hard.
Sino-Vietnamese: the biggest asset, and it pays late
Here is where a Vietnamese child holds something English, French and German children do not. It is also where the promises get oversold.
Figures for the Chinese-derived share of Vietnamese vocabulary range from thirty to seventy per cent, and the number depends entirely on what you count. Alves (2009), counting against a core vocabulary list for the Loanword Typology project, arrived at a far lower borrowing rate than the figures usually quoted. The reason is easy to see:
Kitchen words are native. Eat, drink, sleep, go, house, water, rice, hand, foot — a six-year-old lives inside this layer, and this layer helps almost not at all with Chinese.
Classroom words are Sino-Vietnamese. Học sinh 学生, đại học 大学, thư viện 图书馆, quốc gia 国家, kinh tế 经济, chính trị 政治, lịch sử 历史, khoa học 科学. This is the layer a child only starts using around the fourth or fifth year of school.
Which means: Sino-Vietnamese contributes little in the first two years, begins paying strongly around nine or ten, and eventually becomes a superpower.
Understand that and you avoid the commonest mistake: teaching the cognate system to a six-year-old. A six-year-old does not yet know what quốc gia means in Vietnamese, so being told that 国家 reads quốc gia helps them not at all.
For an eleven-year-old who already uses thư viện, however, pointing out that 图书馆 is đồ thư quán — and that 馆 is the same quán as in the word for a restaurant — opens hundreds of characters at once. That is when to spend it.
Ages six to seven: ear and mouth, no script yet
The goal: get the tones into the ear correctly, and make Chinese a comfortable noise.
Listen daily, twenty minutes. Cartoons where the picture carries the meaning, children's songs, told stories. Repetitive content is a feature, not a fault.
Tone discrimination, three minutes a day. Two syllables, same or different. This is the cheapest, highest-return exercise in the roadmap, and it only works if something tells the child whether they were right.
Sing. Songs load whole phrases into memory in a way drills cannot.
What not to do: do not teach handwriting yet — a six-year-old hand is not ready, and that time earns more in the ear. Do not teach pinyin yet, for reasons below. Do not force speech: the silent period is real, and pressure during it produces only anxiety.
Ages seven to nine: pinyin, and the first three hundred characters
Now the script arrives, and the order matters a great deal.
Pinyin: learn it fast, use it lightly, drop it early. Pinyin is the bridge, not the far bank. The failure mode every Chinese teacher knows is the pinyin crutch: the child reads the romanisation instead of the character, and character learning stops. The fix is to teach pinyin over a few weeks and then strip it out of reading material. If after a year the child still needs it over every character, the bridge has become a crutch.
The first three hundred characters: teach by component. Start with pictographs and simple indicatives — 人, 大, 小, 日, 月, 山, 水, 木, 火 — because they are both memorable and the building material for everything later. Then move to semantic-phonetic compounds and state the rule out loud: this side tells you the meaning, that side tells you the sound.
The character-strategy studies of Ke (1998) and Shen (2005) both found that learners using structural-analysis strategies outperform those relying on rote copying. Copying a character a hundred times is not learning; it is penmanship.
Move to graded readers as soon as there are enough characters. The Hu and Nation (2000) threshold still applies: roughly 98% known characters on the page for comfortable reading. In Chinese this means genuine graded material — 150-character, 300-character, 500-character readers — not comics written for Chinese children, which assume a native child's inventory.
Is handwriting necessary?
This is the most contested question in the field, and the honest answer is partly.
The case for it rests on strong evidence. Tan and colleagues (2005) found that in Chinese children, handwriting skill predicted reading ability better than phonological awareness did, and argued that in Chinese, reading depends on writing, because the act of writing builds the precise orthographic representation.
But read that study to its actual scope. Those were native children, building a three-thousand-character inventory, inside a system that treats good handwriting as a value in itself. A foreign learner aiming at a thousand characters by twelve faces a different cost-benefit — and even native speakers today suffer 提笔忘字, forgetting characters the moment they pick up a pen, because they type far more than they write.
The pragmatic position for this roadmap:
Write, but selectively. Handwrite the foundational characters and the common radicals — the first two or three hundred — so the hand learns the logic of stroke and structure. After that shift to recognition as the main goal, and type pinyin to produce.
Do not let the lesson become a copying session. If the child writes each character twenty times, you are buying resentment at the price of reading time.
Ages nine to eleven: radicals, phonetics, and volume
This is the acceleration stage, and it accelerates because two things start compounding.
First, the script begins explaining itself. Once a child knows a few hundred characters, each new one is no longer a new shape but a combination of familiar pieces. This is what Perfetti, Liu and Tan (2005) describe in the lexical constituency model: skilled Chinese readers process characters through interlinked orthographic, phonological and semantic constituents, not as whole pictures.
Second, the cognate layer switches on. Precisely as the child starts using Sino-Vietnamese words at school, they meet those same words again in Chinese. Point it out systematically: 学, 校, 生, 家, 国, 民, 文, 化. Each character opens dozens of words in both languages at once.
What to do: favour reading volume over difficulty, give real choice — under Ryan and Deci's self-determination theory (2000), autonomy is one of three needs feeding intrinsic motivation — and permit both abandonment and rereading. Rereading matters more in Chinese than in an alphabetic language, because character recognition needs more encounters than word recognition does.
Eleven and up: when the cognate layer becomes a superpower
Now comes the payout.
A Vietnamese teenager who knows a thousand characters and understands the Sino-Vietnamese principle can infer words never studied, in texts well above their nominal level. 环境 hoàn cảnh, 发展 phát triển, 独立 độc lập, 影响 ảnh hưởng, 关系 quan hệ, 经验 kinh nghiệm — not learned, recognised.
This is also the sensible point for explicit grammar, and the good news is that Chinese morphology is far simpler than any European language's: no conjugation, no gender, no number. The difficulty lies elsewhere — measure words, word order, the particles 了 · 着 · 过, and the 把 construction. Those need explaining, and only now is the child able to take an explanation.
On rewards, briefly
The meta-analysis by Deci, Koestner and Ryan (1999), pooling 128 experiments, found that tangible rewards contingent on task completion reliably undermine intrinsic motivation, most strongly in children and most strongly for already-interesting activities.
Chinese has its own variant of the trap: counting characters. A chart tracking how many characters today is the fastest way to turn a language into a quota. Characters are a means of reading something; make them the goal and the child will accumulate characters and read nothing.
What a week looks like
Daily, 20–30 minutes: listening or reading. The child chooses. No quiz afterwards.
Daily, 3–5 minutes: tone discrimination (ages 6–8), later character review by component.
Four times a week, 15 minutes: new characters, structured by component rather than by repetitions.
Once or twice a week: a class — with Chinese, the class's greatest value is someone correcting tones at the moment they go wrong.
That totals 4–5 hours a week, or 180–220 hours a year, or nearly 1,200 hours by twelve. Enough for around a thousand characters, a vocabulary in the thousands, and — far more important — a child who can read what they want to read.
Where the money goes to die
Mass character copying. Hundreds of hours have been burned this way worldwide. The character-strategy research does not support rote copying; it supports structural analysis.
Learning traditional characters for the roots. For a Vietnamese child learning standard Mandarin, simplified is the correct default. Traditional has its own reasons — Taiwan, calligraphy, classical texts — but learning both from the start halves a six-year-old's resources.
HSK too early. HSK 1 and 2 work as gentle milestones. They become a burden when a whole year bends around a vocabulary list designed for adults learning for work.
Flashcard-only apps. Flashcards retain what has been learned; they do not create it. A child with eight hundred cards and no finished book cannot yet read.
How to tell it is working
One: the child recognises a character in the wild. On packaging, in a game, on a restaurant sign. This is the sign the script has left the exercise book.
Two: the child guesses the sound of an unknown character from its phonetic component. That means the system has installed, and from here every new character is cheaper than the last.
Three: the child volunteers a cognate connection. That's quốc, isn't it? — that is the superpower switching on, and it usually switches itself on rather than needing to be taught.
Four: the tones are right when the child is not thinking about them. Correct tones under concentration are easy. Correct tones mid-story are the sign it has actually gone in.
What is actually being built
Chinese has a reputation for difficulty, and much of that reputation comes from teaching it in the wrong order: script before ear, copying before comprehension, counting before reading.
Reverse the order and the problem changes shape. Two years of ear, then characters taught by component, then volume of reading, then the cognate layer switching on exactly when the child is old enough to notice it. Each stage builds what the next one needs.
And as with English, love here is not a wish. It is an engineering constraint: seven hundred hours only accumulate if most of them are hours the child does not resist.
What you are building is not a thousand characters. It is a twelve-year-old who looks at Chinese script and does not see a wall — only a system with rules, most of which they already know, with things they want to read behind it.
