Ask a beginner what makes Chinese hard and they will almost always say the same thing: the characters. There are thousands of them, they look intricate, and copying one out twenty times seems to leave no trace by the next morning. But that difficulty is mostly an illusion created by how characters are usually taught. Decades of memory research point to a very different, and far more effective, approach — the same principles that govern all durable learning, applied to a writing system.
The first shift is to stop seeing a character as a picture to be memorised stroke by stroke, and start seeing it as a combination of reusable parts. Nearly every one of the thousands of characters is assembled from a small inventory of around 200 components, called radicals. Learn the parts, and each new character becomes a short recipe rather than a fresh act of memorisation.

Take 好 (hǎo, good). It is simply 女 (woman) next to 子 (child). Or 妈 (mā, mother): 女 (woman) plus 马 (mǎ, horse) — where the horse also quietly tells you how the whole character sounds. This is what cognitive scientists call chunking: your working memory can hold only a few items at once, so grouping strokes into meaningful components lets you carry far more with the same effort.
Once a character is a set of components, you can bind them together with a vivid mental image — the technique popularised by the Heisig method. For 好, picture a mother judging that her woman-and-child family is exactly what is good in life. The stranger and more sensory the story, the better it sticks.
This works because of elaborative encoding and dual coding: memory holds on to material that is connected to meaning and represented in more than one way. A character tied to a mini-story and a mental picture has many more hooks to be recalled by than a shape you simply stared at.
Even a perfect mnemonic fades. The fix is the spacing effect, one of the most robust findings in all of psychology: information reviewed at growing intervals is remembered far longer than the same information crammed in one sitting. Review a character today, then in two days, then a week, then a month — ideally just as you are about to forget it.
This is exactly what a spaced-repetition app (Anki, or Pleco's flashcards) automates: it schedules each character for the moment it is most fragile, so every review does the maximum work. Fifteen minutes a day, spaced, will beat a three-hour weekend session every time.
Here is the most commonly wasted effort in character study: rereading and re-copying. Recognising a character you are looking at feels like learning, but it barely moves the needle. What builds durable memory is the testing effect — the effort of pulling the character out of memory.
So make every review a small test. See the meaning and sound, then write the character from memory before you check. See the character, and recall its meaning and pronunciation. That moment of struggle, followed by feedback, is where the learning actually happens.
Typing pinyin is convenient, but the hand knows things the eye forgets. Writing a character by hand adds a motor memory trace — the physical sequence of strokes — that strengthens recognition later, even for reading. You do not need to become a calligrapher; a few characters written out by hand each day meaningfully deepens the memory.
