于是, 接着, 结果, 后来
Four ways of saying and then, differing in whether cause is involved.
The rule
于是 = so, thereupon — the second thing happens BECAUSE of the first: 下雨了，于是我们取消了野餐。
接着 = next — pure sequence in time, no cause: 先讲历史，接着讲文化。
结果 = in the end — the outcome, often AGAINST expectation: 他努力了很久，结果还是失败了。
后来 = later on — a further point in a story that is over: 他走了，后来再也没回来。
后来 cannot point forward; for the future use 以后.
