Make It Stick

The definitive popular account of the science of successful learning — retrieval, spacing, interleaving, and why the most comfortable way to study is the least effective one.

Brown, Roediger & McDaniel

Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III and Mark A. McDaniel — two cognitive psychologists and a storyteller — published this in 2014 through the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. Roediger and McDaniel produced much of the research the book describes, so this is not an outsider's summary.

It remains the one to read first if you only read one book about learning.

The argument

The central claim is more uncomfortable than people expect: nearly every popular study habit is wrong, and wrong in a specific way — it produces a feeling of mastery without producing memory.

Rereading a chapter for the third time makes the page feel fluent and familiar. The brain reads that fluency as I know this. But fluency while looking at material does not predict your ability to produce it when the material is gone. They are two different things, and only the second is what you need in an exam or a conversation.

What does produce memory, on the authors' account, is three things:

Retrieval — testing yourself instead of rereading. The act of struggling to recall something is the act that consolidates it. Spacing — reviewing after you have partly forgotten, rather than while it is still fresh. Interleaving — mixing problem types instead of working through one block at a time.

What the three share: they all make studying feel harder and slower. And they work because of that.

What is actually in it

The book opens with stories — a pilot handling an engine failure, a medical student, a police officer. Each chapter takes a real situation and draws the principle out of it.

The most important concept gets a clear name: desirable difficulty. Not all difficulty is good — difficulty caused by faint printing is simply waste. A desirable difficulty is one that forces the brain into extra processing, and it is that extra work which leaves a trace.

Another strong chapter covers the illusion of competence: why learners misjudge themselves so badly, and why the students most confident about their grasp of the material are often those revising in the least effective way.

The book also dismisses learning styles outright — the idea that each person has a preferred channel (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) and should be taught through it. The evidence for teaching to learning styles is close to non-existent, though the idea remains widespread in teacher training.

Why read it

Because it gives the clearest explanation of a counterintuitive fact every learner needs: feeling like you are learning well and actually learning well tend to run in opposite directions.

Once that lands, you stop judging a study session by how fluent it felt at the end, and start judging it by what you can produce the next day.

Where it is thin

It is strong on what and much lighter on how. You will close it fully convinced about retrieval and spacing, and still have to work out for yourself how to apply them to your particular subject. That gap is exactly what Outsmart Your Brain, elsewhere on this shelf, fills.

The narrative style cuts both ways. It makes the book readable, but there are chapters where the anecdote takes up more room than the point it exists to deliver. Readers who prefer dense writing will get impatient.

And an honest note on the evidence: the retrieval effect is most solidly demonstrated for factual material — vocabulary, definitions, dates. For complex skills and open-ended problems the picture is considerably messier, and the book does not make that clear. Laboratory effect sizes also tend to be larger than classroom ones.

Four techniques nobody quotes

Retrieval, spacing and interleaving are the three everyone cites. The book carries four more that are less famous and worth having.

Elaboration — restate what you just learned in your own words and connect it to something you already know. Not repeating a definition, but explaining it to an imagined listener.

Generation — attempt an answer before you are shown one. Even a wrong guess makes the eventual answer stick far better than reading it directly would have, because you have already struggled with the question.

Reflection — after a lesson or a finished task, ask yourself what happened, what you did, and what you would do differently next time. This is really retrieval plus elaboration, and it costs almost no time.

Calibration — check your sense of I know this against an objective measure. This is the antidote to the illusion of competence: you cannot correct a bad self-assessment until you have something other than your own feeling to compare it against.

What to read it alongside

This book leaves an obvious gap, and the shelf already holds the book that fills it.

If you are a learner: read this for the why, then Outsmart Your Brain for the how. That pair is the most natural route through this shelf.

If you are a teacher: pair it with Why Don't Students Like School?. This one gives you the memory mechanism; that one gives you the consequences for lesson design.

If you are learning a language: pair it with Fluent Forever, the only book here that turns these principles into a concrete procedure for languages.

The one book not to read immediately afterwards is Understanding How We Learn — too much overlap.

Who should skip it

If you have genuinely been using spaced flashcards for a few years and understand why they work, this book will not add much. It is a book that persuades, and if you are already persuaded then most of its three hundred pages are confirming what you know.

In that case, skip straight to Outsmart Your Brain, or use Understanding How We Learn as a reference instead.

If you take one thing

Close the book before you check whether you remember it.

That is the whole book in one sentence. Everything else is the explanation of why that sentence is true.
