Why Don't Students Like School?

A cognitive scientist explains how the mind works and what it means for teaching — the most useful book here if you stand in front of a class.

Willingham is a cognitive psychologist writing for teachers. Each chapter opens with a principle about how the brain works and draws out what it means for a classroom. This is the book for teachers; his Outsmart Your Brain, also on this shelf, is the one for learners.

The argument

The title is a real question, and his answer discomfits a lot of teachers:

People do not naturally like to think. Thinking is slow, effortful and unreliable, so the brain prefers habit and automation. We enjoy thinking only under narrow conditions: when a problem is pitched just right — not so easy it bores, not so hard it defeats.

From this comes the most quoted consequence: memory is the residue of thought. You remember exactly what you had to think about. Not what you saw, not what the teacher emphasised — what your brain actually had to process.

The next consequence is the book's most argued-over: critical thinking skills cannot be taught apart from background knowledge. With nothing in your head there is nothing to be critical about. Critical thinking is not a general-purpose skill you can apply across domains — it depends on how much you know about the particular domain.

What is actually in it

The book runs on nine principles, one per chapter, and each chapter closes with classroom implications.

Among them: why factual knowledge must precede skill; why we understand new things through what we already know; why proficiency requires practice with no way around it; and why novices think differently from experts — so asking students to think like a historian before they know any history is asking for something impossible.

One chapter is devoted to demolishing learning styles. Willingham handles it bluntly: students differ in many ways, but not in a preferred channel that teaching should accommodate. The evidence for teaching to learning styles is essentially absent, though it is still taught in teacher training.

The final chapter turns the book's own argument on the profession: teaching is itself a complex cognitive skill, so it too requires deliberate practice to improve.

Why read it

Because it is the most useful book here for anyone who teaches.

Its strength is that it refuses to stop at description. Every principle is pulled down to the question of what should be different about tomorrow's lesson. Very few cognitive science books are willing to go that far.

And the learning-styles chapter alone is worth the time for anyone working in education in Vietnam — because the idea is still circulating in professional development courses, and accommodating it consumes planning time while returning nothing.

Where it is thin

The book is written for American schooling. Many examples about curriculum, classroom organisation and parental expectations do not map onto Vietnam. The principles survive; you have to do the translation yourself.

Memory is the residue of thought is a wonderful and highly memorable line, but it is more description than instruction. Knowing that students remember what they thought about does not by itself tell you how to design an activity that forces them to think about the right thing. The book offers examples, but the gap between principle and lesson plan is still there.

And an honest note: the knowledge-before-skills argument is the most contested part, not because the evidence is weak — it is reasonably well supported — but because it collides with wider pedagogical commitments about student-centred learning. Willingham presents it more tidily than the actual level of agreement in the field warrants.

The nine principles, listed outright

Since each principle is a chapter, listing them shows you at once what the book covers:

  1. People are naturally curious, but they are not naturally good thinkers.
  2. Background knowledge is a precondition for thinking skills.
  3. Memory is the residue of thought.
  4. We understand new things in the context of what we already know.
  5. Proficiency requires practice, without exception.
  6. Cognition early in training is fundamentally different from an expert's.
  7. Children are more alike than different in how they learn.
  8. Intelligence can be changed through sustained effort.
  9. Teaching, like any complex cognitive skill, must be practised to improve.

Principle six is the least quoted and carries the most practical weight: novices are not miniature experts. Experts organise knowledge around deep principles; novices attach to surface features. So asking students to work like a scientist before they have the background knowledge is handing them a task their working memory cannot carry.

The 2021 second edition

The second edition keeps the nine-principle frame but refreshes the examples and adds material on classroom technology — a topic that barely existed in its present form when the first edition appeared in 2009.

If you are buying, get the second edition. If you already own the first, the core has not changed enough to justify replacing it.

Who should skip it

If you are a learner rather than a teacher, this book answers the wrong question for you. It explains why students learn as they do, so that someone running a classroom can design better lessons. You want Outsmart Your Brain.

And if you are after a system you can apply this evening, this is not it. It changes how you think about teaching, and that change arrives gradually over months rather than as a list of things to do.

So the planning question is not what will I present, it is during these forty-five minutes, what will their brains actually have to work on?
