差点儿 — very nearly
差点儿迟到 and 差点儿没迟到 mean the SAME THING — the strangest fact on the syllabus.
規則
差点儿 = very nearly, and the rule turns on whether the thing was WANTED.
UNWANTED events: 差点儿迟到 = 差点儿没迟到 = nearly late (but was not). The two are IDENTICAL.
WANTED events: 差点儿考上 = nearly passed (but failed). 差点儿没考上 = nearly failed (but passed). DIFFERENT.
The rule of thumb: for bad outcomes both forms mean it did not happen; for good ones the 没 flips it.
