Both pick one option over another — but 与其 rejects the first clause and 宁可 keeps it.
規則
与其 A，不如 B = better B than A. The CHOSEN option is in the SECOND clause.
与其等他，不如自己去。 → we go ourselves.
宁可 A，也不 B = rather A than B. The CHOSEN option is in the FIRST clause.
他宁可自己吃亏，也不让别人为难。 → he takes the loss himself.
Remember the direction: 不如 points forward, 也不 throws forward away.
