Decades of research point to a better method, and it is almost the opposite of re-reading: try to recall the material from memory. Close the book and ask, What did that say? The struggle to retrieve — even when you fail — is what strengthens the memory.
Every time you pull a fact out of memory, you make the path to it a little easier to travel next time. Re-reading lays the fact down again on the surface; retrieval carves a groove. Psychologists call this the testing effect, and it is one of the most reliable findings in the science of learning.
