The Testing Effect: Why Recalling Beats Re-reading

The most common way people study is one of the least effective. Here is what works instead.

Open a textbook, highlight a few lines, read them again. It feels productive — the words grow familiar, and familiarity feels like knowing. But familiarity is a trap. When the test comes, the words you recognised on the page refuse to come back on their own.
