A superfood: broccoli

CONCLUSION: Broccoli can slow metastasis down!

Besides Nucleus Medical Media, which has a great many videos on medicine and anatomy, you might look at the NutritionFacts.org channel of Dr Michael Greger, the author of How Not to Die and a thoroughly admirable person.

One of the videos I like best is the one explaining a scientific study on the effect of broccoli on lung cancer metastasis.

CONCLUSION: Broccoli can slow metastasis down!

Here is my summary translation of the video:

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, but lung cancer is the one that really kills women the most. About 85% of women with breast cancer are still alive after five years and longer. But lung cancer is found too late, so the number is reversed: 85% of lung cancer victims have died. And 90% of those deaths are due to metastasis — the lung cancer spreading to other parts of the body.
Broccoli may be able to block the ability of lung cancer to spread.
The way to assess the spread of cancer cells is to put a layer of cancer in a Petri dish and then cut a line down the middle. Within 24 hours the cancer cells have spread back in, and by 30 hours the gap has closed completely. Until, that is, we drip some compounds from the cruciferous family (broccoli, kale) onto them. As you can see, the cancer cells seem almost paralysed, stuck where they are.
Compounds in broccoli inhibit the growth of several kinds of cancer cell — leukaemia, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer and so on.”

Six microscope panels in two rows, “24 h” and “30 h”, and three columns, “Control”, “BITC (5 µM)” and “PEITC (10 µM)”; in the control column the gap in the cell layer has nearly closed, while in the other two it is still wide open
From the NutritionFacts.org video: after 24 and 30 hours the gap in the control dish has nearly closed, while in the two dishes given the cruciferous compounds BITC and PEITC it is still there.

Remember this — revisit it in a few days.
